Quantum Networks of the Future

Cisco's Vision for the Future of Quantum Networks

At Cisco’s Quantum Research group, we envision a future where quantum networks distribute entanglement to interconnect quantum computers and sensing devices. This will facilitate distributed quantum computing and sensing, while also enhancing quantum-safe communication on a large scale. Our dedicated efforts focus on developing the theoretical foundations, as well as the hardware and software technologies essential for:

• Building Practical Quantum Networks: We are creating networks that use quantum entanglement to transfer quantum bits (qubits) of information. These networks will surpass traditional static point-to-point connections, evolving into dynamic systems powered by quantum-enabled switches

• Quantum-Enabled Network Switching Technology: Developing this technology is crucial for forming the backbone of practical and useful quantum networks.

• Designing Network Protocols and Control Stacks: Our goal is to create protocols and control stacks tailored for fully autonomous and software-driven quantum entanglement networks

• Establishing a Digital Twin for Quantum Networks: This will support long-term applications like quantum data centers, as well as short-term applications such as quantum-safe networking.
